After weeks of punchy brights, smouldering eyes and nude palettes, beauty for next season took a surprising turn for the classic at Paris Fashion Week. In a departure from the low-key application favoured at so many of the shows so far, in Paris makeup artists wielded brushes, liners and rouge for the classiest lips we’ve seen on next season’s runways. In opulent berry shades, lips were luscious and luxurious.
Such a high-maintenance look requires the right tools, so be patient and precise. Backstage, MUAs were seen carrying out various stages of prep and application that involved first lining and filling lips with pencil, then applying lipstick with a brush before finally blotting and powdering lips to set colour.

-
MAC Prep and Prime Lip
Creates a colour-free, supple base for lipstick to prolong wear and prevent feathering. We don’t wear lipstick without it (well, sometimes we do, but we can’t guarantee it doesn’t end up a little smeared…).
-
Chanel le Crayon Levres
In an array of rich colours, this liner is soft enough to line and fill your lips. The brush on the other end will blend to a perfect finish, and it will last all day without feathering.
-
Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres
We’ve fallen in love with this latest innovation in lip colour that comes in 18 sumptuous shades. Layer over a matching liner for intensely laquered lips.
-
Illamasqua Lipstick
The ultimate selection of deep, dramatic lip colours in a variety of textures – we love Poison, Diablo and Sangers for achieving A/W’s most gothic lips.
-
Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick
Luxury in a tube, this is one of the richest, most decadent formulations we’ve tried. Fire, Lust and Velvet are our top picks.

MAC Prep and Prime Lip
“I have a drawer full of lipsticks but I’ve never felt that confident in half of the colours I own – until now. MAC’s matte finish lipstick in Diva goes on smoothly and stays exactly where it’s meant to be.”
Alison Elwin, Fashion Editor and Celebrity Stylist
“On days where I just want to wear jeans and a t-shirt I like to jazz it up by applying a coat of MAC Lady Danger red, it’s pure matte pigment and looks amazing on.”
Laura Fantacci, Fashion & Shopping Editor at Red Magazine -
Bobbi Brown Lip Color
“I’m a huge Bobbi fan. Her colours are really diverse and her deep, rich pigments look fab on darker skin.”
Ateh Jewel, Beauty Journalist -
Tom Ford Lip Color
“A wildly extravagant and opulent red lipstick is a must for me. It was my defining flourish back in the 80s and still is now. Makes lips look as enticing as ripe cherries.”
Bethan Cole, Writer and Editor -
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil
“I love a red lip. This is a lip liner and lipstick in one so it’s really easy to apply, especially when you’re constantly on the go during fashion week(s).”
Elle Strauss, Senior Fashion Editor at Lucky Magazine
“These are great if a designer wants a bold lip – and they don’t move! Lips are a focus at the moment, it’s about strength and defiance rather than opulence – like bold brows, a strong matte lip says ‘I’m still here’.”
Jane Richardson, Global Lead Artist for NARS Cosmetics -
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar
“I love this brand. Lip Tars give the colour intensity of a lipstick, with the high shine of a gloss plus the longevity of a tint – what more could a girl ask for. Developed for shoots and shows – its full on, high volume glam.”
